Aero Diner

What to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon?... Head for a diner! In New England that's not hard to do, but finding one as we headed out at 1pm might be dice-y at best. Will they close up early? Do we stay in CT? or venture out to three other states around us?

After hubby checked the internet to see what our choices were, we headed to Windham, CT ... home of Aero Diner. It looks like a diner from the outside (see lithograph), but it extended to the back on the right side once you stepped inside. There was a slight line for tables, but we chanced the counter. What's a diner without trying those stools that can turn you all-the-way-around.....?

Although it could have used a better swipe on the counter to clean it... ALL THE WAY DOWN THE COUNTER, not just in front of us, it would do. The menu had LOTS of selections so it was a little hard to decide.
The staff outfits were very reminiscent of the 50's with a modern update by adding black 'bottoms' (skirt or crop pants-peddlepushers would have been 60 yrs ago). Nice and neat. AND the service was quick! I heard the waitress tell the table behind us if they needed their checks divided up separately, let her know.... WOW! Ususally, they hate to divide checks after-the-fact.

A sheet of specials (poor hubby didn't look at that until he put his choice in for a Red Baron Burger (bacon, BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato, etc)... and a diet cola. I decided to order the Open-faced turkey sandwich ... dinner. Oh. Didn't even realize it was a dinner until it came. Then... Man-o-man was it a DINNER?!!

Well, I'm getting ahead of myself. The salad came and it was so colorful (I just had lemon wedges for dressing) and delicious. I had hot tea since it was cool and damp outside, and starting to move from a drizzle to a downpour!!

It was nice to see a local vendor from our town (Hosmer Soda, where they make their own sodas) being served.

It was nice atmosphere, college kids, families, an older couple (us)... not too noisy, but the music inside was a little salsa/jazz if you can imagine it...The cook would be in the back yelling each waitress' name as her order was ready. Now THAT's a diner!
So then Lee's meal came (hand-cut fries!)... and it looked HUGE and delicious!! Just look at the stretch of that bite!
Then came MY PLATE!!! OMG!
What a meal! oh... did I forget it must have said 'dinner' on the menu, not lunch?
But just look at all those carbs.... those delicious carbs. (I could have just said to the waitress, bring me a doggie-bag now...)We'll see....
It was so good, although the 'skim' on the gravy told me they must have put it in the oven while they were preparing everything else, because the plate was hot when served. ...That was okay with me! The mashed potato was chunky (slightly), but that's how I like them.
I even got leftovers for work the next day.

Lee was the only one getting dessert, but with names like "Playdough", "cotton candy", "coconut almond chocolate chip" (that would have been my choice, if I had room), "moose-tracks", and "birthday cake" ice cream... Lee had to try the birthday cake one...
Ahh... there is the cake!
Definitely was worth the 40 min drive on a rainy afternoon. We're even planning who we can take back here on another trip. Good job, guys/ladies.... 3.5 licks
